The troops loaded the bus shortly after lunch to head north; destination: Sylvan-Lucas Unified High School. This meet consisted of 14 schools scattered throughout Central Kansas. Several newbies performed at this meet: Cora Anderson presented an Informative Speech on Sports Injuries; Maddie Wiltse performed a duet entitled “Ask Big Sister” with Chyanne Deines; Amanda Sizemore, performed a Serious Solo entitled “Daddy Drinks Too Much”, while Leah Collins also performed a Serious Solo, “Guilt”. Tanner Loucks teamed up with Cody Kaler in IDA by creating two performances: “Dude Where’s My Blood” and “The Blooming Christmas”. Kade Urban and Maitland Wiltse combined for IDA again this year with performances entitled “Winter Weather Talent” and Ferris Wheel Package”. Sister duo Alix and Sidney Schneider presented a duet called “He’s Mine”. Lacey Mitchell participated with a Serious Solo entitled “She Looks Good”. Chyanne Deines and Cayla Steinert each performed in Prose with pieces entitled “Dear Future Generations” and “Five Lessons I Learned in My 1st Year of Teaching” respectively. Justin Scott presented a Poetry Piece by the title of “I’ll Fix Anthony”. Ashtyn Butler, Ben Welsh and exchange student Michel Abagge also tagged along for the ride to see what this thing called Forensics was all about.

The “new kids on the block” eventually grew comfortable with seeing people talking to walls, running around screaming and working on their pieces. Kids realized that basically anything goes at a Forensics meet and that EVERYONE is accepted--no matter what. The Cougars broke two events into Finals: Kade and Maitland in IDA who finished 2nd overall with their performance entitled “All Eyes on You”. They are qualified for State Champs! Leah also broke finals with her Serious Solo. She finished 6th place overall.

It was a great first meet for the Cougars, as nearly all performers scored higher the second round. We are excited to see what the season hold for us! Next meet is at Kinsley on Saturday, January 28.
